I know what you mean. The world seems to be build around the consumption of alcohol. Social events, sports, you even drink wine in church! So of course, you remove all the alcohol from your home, but beyond that you dont have much control over the rest of the world. At some point you're going to have to go someplace where alcohol will be served, even if its just to see friends who do still drink.
I go to social events after work with my husband (also recovering). The place is usually was packed and few people sometimes asked what I'm drinking, but they don't care when I say "coke and cran with ice". They're just curious and its the start of a conversation.
Most people are at a bar first and foremost to socialize. The only people who will not understand that people can go the whole night without drinking alcohol in a bar will be in a local meeting sooner than they think.
Stay strong, keep going.
And when you're ready, embrace the new you.
Though I'd recommend go over chess, but its a personal thing.
