As you progresses through recovery, life once again begins to take on some normality and routine is a welcome by product of this. As each new day passes, you strive to accomplish as much as possible in any twenty-four hour period. Initially it is exciting rediscovering things with a sober eye and perhaps trying new things as well.
As time goes on you may begin to notice a certain melancholy when doing some mundane task that takes you back to before your drinking got out of hand. This task may be more difficult than you remember it being or not taking as long to complete. One thing is apparent, you realize now how much time you wasted on drinking, how much time has passed, and how much you have to make up for.

During early stage recovery it is particularly difficult to avoid giving in to your craving for alcohol, yet you must persevere. It is critical to focus on your sobriety for that day, hour or even the next minute if that is going to help you from taking that first drink. Your entire being must be about avoiding alcohol at all costs. Frankly, even if you tried, there is little else you will think about in the early days of being alcohol free.Your situation with alcohol will be foremost on your mind and probably should be in the early days of sobriety, but eventually you will need to get on with your life, trying to regain a normal lifestyle again. It’s challenging - reminders of alcohol will be everywhere and unless you relocate to a cave somewhere you will need to adjust your mind to the new reality that is your life free from alcohol. When someone drinks excessively and they know it, they are under physiological threat because of the damage alcohol can cause to ones health. Also the nature of drinking too much requires you to make sure you always have sufficient alcohol on hand to feed your addiction. Throw in a mix of family obligations, employment or work issues, maybe even hiding alcohol etc. and you are under quite a bit of stress just to maintain your life with alcohol as its hub.

I remember asking myself this question almost every day when I was in the primary stages of my final recovery from drinking. I simply could not smile anymore; people I was now depending on were walking around me on egg shells. Getting sober wasn’t supposed to suck the life blood out of me. I had stopped drinking before often to ‘dry’ out and after a few days of the shakes and the longest hangovers in recorded history, I always seemed to be able to get by without alcohol, at least until my next drink. When you, as a physician, help someone to accept Well-being enough that they allow the Well-being, whether they allow it in this physical body or whether they have to release this physical body to allow it, it’s still the same thing. In other words, they can allow the wellness into this body, or they can allow the wellness by leaving this body. But allowing the wellness is what you are assisting them in doing. Focus upon the Well-being, and see them opening and receiving it here, or opening and receiving it from Non-Physical. But focus upon the Well-being. And as you focus upon the Well-being, what we’ve noticed is, if you can get someone’s attention and you can convince them that Well-being is the order of the day—there is no illness that will not leave them in the moment that they finally get that. 3/02/02 ‘Abe Quotes’ from Jerry and Esther Hicks.
