Why do people in general consume alcohol? Is it because they like the taste of an exotic cocktail, or they want to appear sociable when in the company of others who are drinking? Or maybe they like the way one drink helps them relax just the tiniest bit or they enjoy a fine glass of wine with certain foods. These are totally acceptable reasons for imbibing, and millions of people who drink this way are doing so without ulterior motive. Continue Reading »

As awful as an alcoholic’s life can become during the drinking days, there are times when in recovery an alcoholic will remember when things were pretty good – and this can lead to problems. Remembering when times weren’t so bad when drinking can certainly take you down memory lane – like having a few beers on a hot summer day after mowing the lawn while listening to a ball game. An enjoyable experience at the time and if you weren’t an alcoholic this would be much more than a memory.

The Early Days Of Recovery
The voice in your head says “wouldn’t it be great to have a beer when it’s so hot outside? You know how much you like the smell and taste of a freshly cracked open beer…”; the voice can be relentless…”you know you usually have a couple drinks of scotch when you relax at night on the patio…”. And so it goes, the mind games of early recovery and that incessant voice reminding you how great it was/is to drink. Continue Reading »

A Recovery Prayer Analyzed
Most alcoholics first hear the serenity prayer at their initial 12-step meeting. As the meeting ends, all gathered stand and hold hands saying aloud the serenity prayer and then raising their clasped hands bellow “keep coming back!” It’s as if they are aware that some may be attending their last meeting so they are reaffirming to the weak that there is strength in their numbers.
The prayer itself is simple enough to remember and yet carries unusually strong meaning to every alcoholic in the room. The beauty of the Serenity Prayer is in its uncomplicated message of hope, peace, fearlessness and insight. All things a recovering alcoholic strives for in building a new life without addiction to alcohol. Continue Reading »

That next drink will not be our last drink and our better judgment tells us this even if we disregard it. When we stop drinking, unless we follow a strict treatment and recovery regimen and remain vigilant, we could easily slip back into our old destructive habits. There are some warning signals we should be aware of that can alert us to a potential return to drinking behavior. Continue Reading »

Problem drinkers and alcoholics all share one particular attribute and it is not something that should make them proud. The more they drink, the less they are in control of their faculties. On the face of it, this may not sound too serious and even sound obvious but a closer look reveals more. The inebriation aside, will you be able to remember what you say and do to those you meet? Where is the drinking taking place? Many problem drinkers specifically aren’t aware of the amount they are consuming at various social gatherings and so may not notice their behavior issues as others around them do. Simple observations by others in attendance can alert them to the fact you are drinking too much.

As silly as this statement might sounds it definitely can be true. There are those alcoholics who drink but don’t necessarily get drunk. They do not exhibit drunken behavior and actually function adequately in public. They are still at risk for alcohol related illnesses such as heart problems, liver disease or cancers but to look at them they may appear to be pretty well normal. These are very dangerous alcoholics. Continue Reading »
