Drinking On The Job? – Get Help Now!
You know your alcohol intake is getting out of control because you are drinking more in the evenings and you look forward to every opportunity you have to consume alcohol. You used to cut loose on the weekends but now it’s getting to be every day. Booze is starting to become very important in your life and you are worried because the more you tell yourself you’re in trouble the less able you are to ask for help.
This is the cunningly deceptive way that alcohol takes over your life. The more you drink the more you NEED to drink to maintain some semblance of normality in your day to day life. It started simply enough with the last time you woke up hung over and decided to test that hair of the dog theory. When it worked you were able to actually prepare yourself for work and even enjoy a little buzz while you where at it.
Now you’re on the job and functioning quite well with a smile until a few hours into your day you feel suddenly nauseous and sweaty, trembling slightly you take a couple aspirins and throw some water on your face. You blame it on your couple quick ounces on an empty stomach before you left this morning. In actual fact you are starting to sober up at work and are about to experience the delayed hangover you tried to avoid earlier.
You avoid others at the office and watch the clock until lunch time when you drive yourself home and frantically prepare for your afternoon by filling up an empty juice bottle with OJ and vodka. Sealing the bottle you put it in your bag and take a couple swigs from the mother ship for good measure before putting it away and leaving for work once again. You stop at a store on the way and buy some breath spray and gum. As you continue driving you realize you shouldn’t be behind the wheel but carefully get on with it.
Back at your desk you spend the rest of the afternoon sipping your “juice” just to keep you aligned and semi comfortable; anything to keep from coming down again. You leave the office feeling like you got away with something big so in relief you decide to head to your corner bar for a lifter before you head home, any opportunity right?
At home that night you toss out the juice bottle and decide you need to cut back on your drinking while you sip on your latest cocktail and decide that the weekend is a good time to experiment with more controlled drinking. You just need to avoid that hang over in the morning, this doesn’t mean you have to quit altogether. There’s no need to be hasty since you are still able to function alright at work, even if today was a close call. Monitoring and controlling what you drink will be the ticket.
You’ll devise a plan so you will be able to tell when you need to stop drinking for the night so the mornings aren’t so rough. You enjoy the feeling of relaxation drinking gives you after a tough day in the salt mines and you deserve it. Before you know it you have to turn in and when you stand up you need to focus on walking because once again you over did it. Disappointed in yourself you stagger into the kitchen and retrieve the juice bottle from the trash, wash it out and set it on the counter so it will be available for duty in the morning.
You decide to prepare your juice bottle with vodka and OJ now rather than being rushed in the morning so reaching into the cupboard you pull out a near empty vodka bottle and your heart skips a beat! There won’t be enough to mix your bottle for work so you decide to empty the remaining vodka into your glass for your last drink of the night, while mulling over your plan for the morning. You lay in bed, your mind racing, trying to understand what’s happening to you while estimating how long it will take you to stop at the liquor store, mix your juice bottle and get to work. Once again you promise yourself you will fix this on the weekend before you pass out.
Its worse this morning, you’ve never felt this lousy after a night of drinking; then you realize it was an entire day of drinking! No wonder you feel so brutal! At the liquor store you stock up with a bag of bottles while the clerk looks at you sideways, it is after all only 8:30 in the morning. You stop at the back of the parking lot and look around quickly, mix your drink a bit stronger than yesterday but you feel like you’ll need it. You drink half the juice bottle now and then refill it for work, catching your breath for a moment; you can’t believe how insane this all is. You tell yourself you must do this to keep your job.
That night at home you are exhausted. You can’t believe what your day has been like and once again after a meal eaten over the sink you pour yourself a drink. You dodged another bullet today but you wonder how long this can go on for. You’ve never been this stressed out before and when a co-worker, for no apparent reason asked if you were feeling sick, your ability to lie through your teeth surprised you but once again it was necessary.
It’s only Tuesday night and you tell yourself next week will be different because you are going to put things right on the weekend. You have a plan to cut back on your drinking. You have no choice. Head office is sending the company VP to review you, all of your staff and branch operations so you’ll need to be at the top of your game if you want that promotion…
